Google DeepMind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis said something remarkable in an interview that artificial intelligence has the potential to eradicate all disease within as little as 10 years.
Hassabis anticipated that with the way AI models continue to improve at a pace, they could not only aid in curing ailments, but potentially put an end to all of them.
While being interviewed by CBS' 60 Minutes, the CEO mentioned how technology has transformed human health in the recent past and how AI might be able to transform it further.
"Typically, it costs, ten years and billions of dollars to create one drug. I guess we could bring that down to maybe months if we worked hard; maybe even weeks. "AI could revolutionize human health. Someday we may actually cure all diseases with AI," he said.
Even the interviewer was stunned by his statement and wanted to know if he was implying the idea of a way of digging up all diseases. "I think that's within reach. I would say most likely in the next ten years or so.
The video was a social media hit with Perplexity AI chief executive Aravind Srinivas speaking up for the DeepMind head, "Demis is a genius and he should have all the resources in the world to make this happen," he stated.
Recently, Hassabis spoke about how far AI has progressed in regards to protein structures that are utilized to create treatments for diseases. AI could determine approximately 200 million protein structures in a year, which, if done through human effort, would have taken about a billion research years. So he told Linkedin's CEO Reid Hoffman
